Welcome to Chambercombe Manor
|
WELCOME to the Chambercombe Manor website, gateway to a most unique and intriguing property, steeped in history and legend is mentioned in the Domesday book.
Chambercombe Manor was owned by the Champernon family from around 1162. In the early 16th century it became the property of Henry Duke of Suffolk father of the ill fated Lady Jane Grey.
In 1738 Jan Vye the current occupier had to make some repairs to the house, on looking up he saw the outline of a window not noticed before. Baffled, he considered each room internally. Finally he went upstairs and knocked on the wall where he thought the window might be and heard it echo back at him. He then rushed outside to fetch his pick axe and without futher thought proceded to knock the wall down. He soon discovered a secret room which had been bricked up for many years and on the remains of a bedstead was a skeleton of a woman. To hear the rest of this tragic story join one of our guided tours, which usually lasts approximately one hour.
